So i downloaded this this morning just to check it out after seeing it advertised for about ~2 months in the itunes store. Its free to download and play initially.
Sweet mario on iOS!
Installing is very quick, as it downloads the majority of the data as you play it. The only issue with this is if you are on mobile data, it has a % downloaded bar but it just downloads and does not say how much its downloading or ask if you want to download a large chunk on mobile data, if this is an issue for you probably only play it when connected to wifi to avoid the data costs.
Its pretty slick, and just like mario on 3DS (or any other nintendo console) except way simplified controls. No left and right any more, mario just runs and you control the jumping. There are some blocks that you can stand on that will stop mario from running, usually just before you get to a place where you can jump up or down.
I have had a 3DS for a few years and am used to paying around $40-60 for the privilege to play their games, so im used to paying for it. However i was not prepared to pay to unlock content for this one, i thought it would be fully playable and then pay to make yourself look awesome or something.
So i got through the first three levels and then i get up the the first castle which is greyed out, and i get this prompt. Pay to Play (not the exact prompt). But basically its free to play the first three levels and then you have to pay to play the rest. I think this will probably make them a ton of cash, but i wont be paying to play the rest (maybe i will) im still deciding. I guess $14.99 is not too bad for a full mario game. But once i pay is there going to be other things that i will need to unlock? Probably.
Here is what you get after playing the first three levels:
Will you be paying to play this? I'm still on the fence. The first three levels seem quite good, but the rest of the game is probably much of the same. On one hand 15$ is pretty cheap for a whole game, and then on the other hand its still $15.
