I'll preface this by saying I've been spending an hour or so hunting solutions, but everything I find is either specific to Windows, doesn't work for me, or isn't dumbed down enough for my just-off-migraine-meds monkey brain that hasn't used Linux since this past June, on hardware that couldn't even run the game. That being said, it's pretty much exactly as it is in the title. My brain has about the same power output as a potato battery rn, so try to dumb it down as much as possible, please and thank you. If you need any more information, I'd be happy to provide it to you

Yeah, nvidia geforce. I've seen a couple others have problems with nvidia speicfically, but once again, the solutions were not ones my potato brain could comprehend

not all solutions work for every system

Did you try wayland vs xorg ?

Maybe the gpu driver is causing this.

NVIDIA has historically always been terrible on Linux. The game works out of the box with my AMD card, so I'd wager the issue is with Ubuntu's drivers.

AMD has better support for Linux and also open source drivers.

I changed the driver, and, amazingly, made some progress. Now instead of just crashing with no info, I get a popup that the program isn't responding any time I click start or options from the launcher, with the "wait" or "force quit" options that you'd expect. Clicking "wait" does effectively nothing except close the window for a bit. Normally I'd be pissed, but given the nothing I've been having thus far, I'm just glad I have something

Run Steam through the terminal and see if the logs that appear give you any information.
Also, make sure you aren't using Nouveau drivers.

I'm not using Nouveau, so that's def not it. I'll try to run it through the terminal, and go from there

Alright, so assuming you're referring to the logs on boot (I still have potato brain), nothing out of the ordinary happened. Worth nothing is that after sending the message about changing the driver, I tried to boot up the game a couple more times and sometimes (but not always) got the Processing Vulkan Shaders popup, which did not happen before. This has been happening with other games too since I changed it, the only difference there being it's been happening consistently. There might be a pattern, but I have no idea if it even matters if there is one. Either way, progress.

Still nothing out of the ordinary. Sorry for the confusion

I am very sad it still does not work on your system but if you ever decide to go AMD then i'd recommend Sapphire Pulse. These are great cards, they have zero rpm (the fan does not spin if temperatures are low ... on Linux !!) and they require not additional setup, these cards work out of the box using Ubuntu 22.04.

I have an nvidia card and have to use a really old version of Proton to get this game to work, Proton 6.3.8 if I remember correctly. Maybe try that.

That could actually work. That's the one thing I haven't tried yet. I'll get back to you on it

you have not tried that before ? eben old eidos tomb raider games run with some version of proton ... but of course; also steam hardware has amd so that is the reason why we are lucky to be on linux.
