Constant crashing
I've tested this on the following two computers with fresh started games to rule out corrupted saves. Two different steam accounts tested.
AMD 5600G
16GB ram
AMD RX6600
Windows 10
AMD 5800X
32GB ram
Nvideo rtx 3060
Windows 10
I have for the heck of it tried Windows 11 on both machines, random crashing persists.
Is there an update on the stability issues and/or time frame for a patch for this problem?

Xenophobe replied to Constant crashing May 9, 2023 @ 12:53:48 pm PDTgame runs fine for most and I wouldn't be expecting any more patches for the game either. given the only common denominator is windows 10/11, I'd say it's something in the OS.
do you have windows gamemode enabled? if so, try disabling it.
if the motherboards come with audio enhancement apps like nahimic or sonic studio, these are known to cause issues and should be disabled or just uninstalled.
audio settings also can break the game. make sure the pc default audio format is set to 48000 Hz.

I've also tried this on my Mint Linux system, AMD 5800X, RTX 3060 card. Same results.
I've tried the base video drivers and the latest video drivers on all three in iteration, issue persists.
The problem is not O/S. The problem is not hardware. The problem is not driver. The problem is the game itself.
Prior to the patch in Jan 2022, this game worked fine on all three of these. The Jan 2022 patch broke it, plain and simple.

Xenophobe replied to Constant crashing May 9, 2023 @ 3:57:27 pm PDTI run this game without any crashing, during 2-3 hours of play, on the following:
linux mint 21.1, kernel 5.15.0-71
GE-Proton7-55
i7-11700K
32GB DDR4 @3200
RX 6700 XT, using stock mesa driver 22.2.5
2TB M.2 NVMe 1.4 SSD
old 1080p tv @60 Hz
I dumped windows 2 years ago, but the game is the same windows version being run with proton. It's got to be something on your end, if it was the game then it would affect everyone.
Edit: Have you tried disabling cloud saves and deleting the game's config files (make backups first) and starting the game to generate clean ones? Outside of the known conflicting apps and OS settings, a bad config file being downloaded from the cloud is the only other thing I can think of at the moment.

Given microsoft seems to break things more often than not with their forced updates ... you may have some corrupted system files. You could try running these windows tools as follows (when I still used windows I'd run these after every cumulative update):
1. run windows disk cleanup - clean system files - select all choices.
2. open an administrative command prompt by right clicking command prompt and select 'run as administrator' even if on an admin account.
3. run
4. run
5. run
These are built in windows tools, but I encourage anyone to research them first before running them on blind faith.

SFC /scannow? Really? I've been an IT tech for 30 years and do you know how many times SFC has actually worked for me? Once and that resulted a complete system wipe and reload anyway.
The two Windows systems I am using are brand new fresh loads.
The third system is Mint Linux, again, a fresh load. That removes Microsoft being an issue for this problem.

Just out of curiosity, is your mint system upgraded to 21.1, what kernel version, what gpu driver set is it using and which proton version did you try?

I think I said this already but just in case:
Someone found out that HZD, against Steam specifications, moves game setting data through Steam Cloud. That means if you have e.g. DLSS turned on on one system and you set up HZD on another and let the cloud data migrate, it could potentially enable an incompatible setting on e.g. an AMD GPU and so end up causing the game to crash.
The resolution, unfortunately, is to disable Steam Cloud entirely on any system with HZD on it and then force the game back to default settings:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Horizon_Zero_Dawn
Scroll down to "Game data" and look in the mentioned folder. To be on the safe side just copy all the contents somewhere else, then delete the files stored there, and then start the game fresh.
See if you can induce it to crash after that.
