Is there character creation like in the old lego games

No, you can't create your own character. There are a hundreds of characters to choose from, though. But you have to unlock them first, and when you play through the story, you'll often be limited to the cast of the respective movie scenes. You can, however, later replay the story with more freedom in your choice of characters.
