No. This game is permadeath only.
In vanilla at least.

You can use Skill Recovery Journal mod to get back your lost skill EXPs.

Backup your saves.
It is/was strongly advised to backup your saves occasionally (or depending how you like it regularly) as it is a game in early access. So some game breaking bugs might occur and corrupt your saves. (However luckily i have not encounter any of these for a long while. The last time was i think when the stairs bug was still around:D)

To backup your saves just find your saves under the ...Username/Zomboid/Saves folder.
(The username is the one you gave to the OS as user.)

Well... technically there is, if you don't have a backup. Backups would be your go to, if you back up a save you can reload it whenever you want by dropping it into the game files, nothing after the backup will be saved tho.

The 'technically' part is, if you do a system restore, you could get it back, if you know when you died, but probably not worth it, unless you've got hundreds of hours into 1 character on vanilla xp gains.

yeh that is what i was leaning toward. But no one here knows of a mod that enable you to either auto save every 30 minutes or to manually save before an encounter?

There's is a way, not sure if it's a glitch or a feature from one of the mod i use

Basically, when you died, quit to desktop (haven't tried quit to menu) and open the game
once you load your save file, you will be back on your bed with all gear intact, you can also find your dead corpse with the gear you wearing at the time of your demise

I haven't check which mod that does this, but im guessing this mod

EDIT#
Turn out is not skill4ever, but it definitely my modlist that glitch the game

Not exactly what you are looking for, but note that you can use multiple characters in the same world and switch between them. You can have separate characters specialize in different areas. This way if your scavenger does something stupid in Louisville and crowd-surfs a zombie horde, at least you don't lose the skills of your farmer, carpenter, mechanic, etc.

Is this a mod or its part of vanilla game. What do the characters do while they are not being used?

It's an often overlooked part of the vanilla game, no mods. When you load a game, click "More" button, and there you can select a character to play as or create a new one to add to the same map.

When a character is not active, it doesn't exist in the world. When it's switched to at game load, it appears in the same place and in same condition it was last time, but the time has progressed as you played with the other character, and state of the world has changed. This can be awkward sometimes if you switch from a character late at night and load him back up when it's morning, he'll be tired and ready to hit the bed just as he was the evening you switched away from him. Overall, it works pretty nicely, though.
