"Obviously we’d be looking to give the world a much more eroded aesthetic if you were playing 100 years after the Knox event, for those hoping for a more Last of Us style degradation of the world over longer time spans, but it’s unlikely we’ll address this before 42’s release as we have a lot on our plate already". Omg, I think I'm crying. You guys have everything in mind!

I think it isn't unrealistic to be able to forge a viking sword at high levels of metalworking.

I love the game and they're doing great at adding things and improving things, but this latest blog is another example of the devs getting way too outside the box with things they'd "like" to do.

They're looking 100 years into the zomboid future vs the immediate. Making it 100 years in the game right now isn't even plausible. Go for immediate needs and things people have been asking for for years before you concern yourself with shiny flashy things of the future. It all sounds really great, but it isn't plausible at all at this point in time.

It's good to know they are thinking about these things. They also said it's not planned for the next big update because they know it's not doable as for now.

I personally dislike automation-based minecraft tech, but I do like tech mods where you do a lot of the work yourself. For example, in the one I've been playing recently, there are things like mortar and pestle, a mill (that can be hand cranked, or used with gears to make a watermill if you're near flowing water), things like a crucible that first needs to be molded and then hardened, and once you get the crucible ready, you have to put it over a fire in order to get it to make things... There's a lot of tech available, but it's BELIEVABLE tech. I think things like that would fit well into zomboid.

The modpack I've been playing is called rebirth of the night, if anyone is wondering.

Thanks for another blog post! I am under the impression that a large swatch of people are underestimating how significant build 42 will be at it's release. This of course doesn't include any of the additional updates that will begin to spawn afterwards. Taking the time to rebuild the foundation of so many systems may feel underwhelming in regards to players but patience is a virtue.

Did one of the greatest online FPS, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, receive updates? No, it had an expansion you had to pay for, or download community driven updates/maps/sever hosting platforms, and a sever search browser. Many quality masterpieces of gaming have become lost to time. We get to sit comfortably as we watch true game development happening before our very eyes.

Enjoy the show folks!

just want to say its awesome seeing you guys go through community posts. literally just saw this screenshot yesterday i believe while scrolling through. didn't think anything of it since it wasn't anything spectacular, but highlighting it in a pin for a devpost is so cool. is that where most of your screenshot pins come from btw now that i think about it?

100 years? God...
Considering we will have a blacksmith. 25,50 or 100 years after Knox event, will fit like a glove!
Playing project zomboid like medieval times: swords, axes, plate armor and so on. No guns and no cars.

But honestly, to implement the concept of time, the game should have some "block system": each npc and character should have "age". You can start before Knox event and die like an elder after 20 years in game. But that would be crazy because we do not have childrens as well and we do not have a 'The Sims' system too. lol

Thinking about time is an interesting concept and fun. Not only about that but even the height of each character and NPC should be change to "random".

Probably would be the most interesting zombie-simulator-game ever. :P

Though this thread is pretty drama-free, it might be helpful to those who are here to outline PZ's history a bit:

Build 41 took 4 years, with the first public release coming out around a year after work started on it. It received beta updates throughout those 4 years. We finished it up in November of last year.

We've all moved to 42 development and have been working on Build 42 for 5 months.

We'll never be repeating a build like 41 in terms of size of scope; so there's no need to fear that 42 will take a decade, but there's also no reason to expect it in the next few months, either.

Unlike from 2011 - 2018, we're not doing tiny, frequent updates anymore (outside of the beta branches, when they become available, ofc). It burns people out, negatively affected the growth and reputation of the game (because small updates don't make people happy, despite what they kept telling us). And yes, despite our reputation, during this period, the longest update was something like 9 months and most averaged 3-4.

So, please don't hype yourself up and expect a release within the next handful of months. When setting expectations for others to follow, remember that it's better to be pleasantly surprised instead repeatedly disappointed.

As is, things have been going well internally and we've found a pace that seems to really work for us. A lot of work was done along-side 42 and has now been integrated into our internal test build of 42, but finishing 41 was still a major time sink (one that several new devs cut their teeth on). Fully fleshing it out (not to mention getting the other headlining features in) and having it all work together is just starting now. Just don't expect it "Soon."
