Index Grey screen only on VRchat

So this isn't my issue but my Bfs issue. He has an index with vive 1.0 base stations, they track fine in everygame BUT Vrc. It'll grey screen when he shows user models or if I'm using certain models. He's got a 3080, again other games run perfect. I have a feeling something is up with his base stations and the game but i was wondering if anyone had an idea what tf the isshe might be? Not even sure if this is the right discussions to post this in but starting somewhere. thankss

that has nothing to do with base stations (if it where them hed lose tracking or gray out all the time or in certain spots in his room) sounds more like outdated gpu drives that cant handle sheders being used on those models.

My thoughts as well.
Does really sound like a shader issue.

In case where the grey screen appears when you're using a certain model.. does the grey screen disappear if you, say, leave the room? If yes, then this is certainly a shader issue.

Yeah if he hides problem avatars it'll stop. Y'all are life savers thank you

I know you kinda solved this, but I had a similar issue pop up after installing a 30 series card. The answer for me was that I have one of the early adopting AMD cpu motherboards for the PCI-E Gen 4 tech. It would try to run the 3070 on PCI-E gen 4, which caused various issues (most to only notably in VRC) The solution ended up being to go into bios settings and changing the PCI-E slot from Auto to Gen 3. Since then, everything is perfect.

If he's still having issues, it may be worth considering/ doing some research on that topic. It may fix any issues that linger.

we did try that months ago, what worked was getting a usb board extension thing. It stopped having so much USB load freaking out his pc

how do you hide problem avatars? like is there a general fix for this?
Because this just started happening to me recently where if i go into public lobbies i grey screen. Granted, I'm running a vive pro 2 with fbt and for some reason it seems like all the sudden my tracking is messing up in VRC and in the steam home but VRC is the only game that consistently makes me grey screen and then my audio glitches out and it just has a chain reaction effect.

Just turn on the full protection mode so everybody would have the default avatars/turn off shaders.

Only restore the avatars for people you trust.
Eventually, you'll stumble upon a person, who'll get you grayscreened. Then, ask him to share that avatar with you. Try and get that avatar off him. Then, try and share that avatar with us - we'll probably be able to tell which shader exactly is causing you that issue.

You can also try the ShaderFest worlds. Go around and see which shader is causing you issues when you're looking at it.

Hey Im so super late but I found the solution. Same thing was happening to me. Go into your bios upon start up and change all of your PCIE settings to Gen 3. I was going through the same exact thing with a certain avatar and I found a reddit post with the solution. When I did this it instantly fixed my grey screen. Hopefully people see this reply for anyone going through this exact situation

Wow.. I guess that was either a memory corruption, or motherboard "incompatibility". Which GPU do you have? Nvidia? AMD?

Seeing that kind of bug is really funny, especially that there are plenty of people who have the odacity to angrily complain about "a game is causing BSODs cause other games don't BSOD" :steamfacepalm:
People just assume hardware/software interaction is not complex and has no chance to backfire. And if it does, it is automatically software developer's problem.
