This Week in Heroes Esports – August 18, 2016
The Machines of War are rumbling to life in the Nexus! This week, gamescom in Cologne, Germany is the stage not only for this year’s second Europe Fall Regional, but also for exciting new Heroes Battleground and Hero announcements. Two new Battlegrounds have been revealed, two new Heroes have been named, and by the end of this week, the second of two European teams headed to BlizzCon will have been determined.

Europe Fall Regional 2 Underway in Cologne!
gamescom is upon us, and Europe’s second Fall Regional is well underway. The first two days of competition are dedicated to double-elimination group stages and, on day one, there were few surprises. In Group A. Team Dignitas emerged as the top seeds following victories over ePunks and Fnatic, the latter of whom claimed the second seed at the expense of To Be Determined.

In Group B, Misfits managed to defeat both GooglelshetZont and Excelente Eleccion without dropping a game, and will go into Day 3 as the group's top seeds as a result. To determine which team would join Misfits in the semifinals, Excelente Eleccion faced off against The Jabronis, whom they had already beaten 2-1 in an earlier series. The tables were turned in the rematch though and, after some closely contested games, The Jabronis progressed with a 2-1 win.

Beyond the Nexus: One Step Closer to BlizzCon
Episode eight of Beyond the Nexus was filled with news and insight for North American fans, including an exclusive announcement from Gale Force eSports, who revealed both the retirement of and replacement for one of their players. Also included were a preview of Europe Fall Regional 2 and a great Comm Down segment featuring from the Grand Finals at North America Regional 1.
Gold League Finals Update
In China’s Gold League, the top teams’ roster swaps appear have paid off. The round-robin Group Stage has concluded, and last year’s Global Championship representatives both managed to top their groups; X-Team swept Group A ahead of the somewhat inaccurately named Super Perfect Team (who scraped through with a rocky 4-3 record), while eStar Gaming swept Group B ahead of Zero Gaming.
Going into next week’s finals, this means that the only way for X-Team and eStar Gaming to meet is in the Grand Final. Assuming both former champions can make it past their Semifinal opponents, that’s a series that you won’t want to miss!
Greymane Killing it in Korea
In Korea, underdog teams RoMg and BooM fought it out in Group A of Super League. BooM did not disappoint, with strong Greymane-centric burst compositions that proved too much for the outdated and outclassed drafting of RoMg. BooM ran with Greymane all the way to the bank, netting themselves a 3-0 victory and giving the other teams in Group A a reason to fear the Inner Beast.
Group B’s last two teams, L5 and First Family, will be up next to battle it out in Group B before Group A swings back with two more killer matches. MVP Miracle will be facing off against BooM and, just two days later, we’ll see the current Global Champions Tempo Storm strike at RoMg. If ever there was a time to watch the Korean scene, it’s now!
The Machines of War Hum to Life at gamescom!
The Eternal Conflict has come and gone, but a new struggle awaits our Heroes as The Machines of War bring the battles of StarCraft close.
Two new StarCraft-themed Battlegrounds will enter the competitive playground: Braxis Holdout and Warhead Junction. Everything is better in pairs, and Hero releases are no exception. Legacy of the Void players around the world are rejoicing over the announcement of Protoss highlord Alarak, the first of the two announced Heroes to be released on September 13. Two weeks later, on September 27, it’ll be Zarya’s turn as she becomes only the second Overwatch Hero to make the jump to the Nexus.
