This still happens often when you logout while in bed. Any sort of fast travel or teleport or dying will fix.

I just had this problem. Knocking yourself out with narcotics also works if you have any on you. I had to do it twice.

Log off and reconnect to the server should work. The same error for whistle you dinos its not working if you press the key for it.

You could try getting him to add the the server to favourites on Steam & it should appear in the Favourites tab for both Steam & Ark. You'll need to join it through ARK itself though.
