Scrolls Discussion Oldhammer's Decay Guide
But I have played over a thousand games, maybe close to 2000, I'm not sure, I'm away from my game computer, so I've learnt a thing or two and I've been playing almost exclusively Decay (splash) decks and I've used most Decay Cards.
So, Decay has come out, let's see how it works in the cold, lonely world of the pretend Beta.
Overall, I like it. It also seems to be the comeback King. I forget the number of times I've won despite being 2 idols down.
The thing to be wary of with Decay is the urge to not build up the resource. It has many strong, low cost cards and the temptation, perhaps more than with any other resource apart from growth, is great to keep saccing for cards. Try to avoid this. Even so, you rarely need more than 7D, especially with splash decks.
vs Decay
Nothing funnier than when two decay players are desperate not to kill their oppo's creatures. So far I've discovered that Decay Splash is much stronger than mono-decay.
vs Order
Tough this, you get enough poison, curse and damage out, the structural integrity of the Hon Gen Pack is destroyed. Also, Waking Wall is somewhat nullified because of Decay's direct idol damage and because it becomes a Searing Shackles and Mire Curse target. Even the fearsome Mangonel plus Speed Combo can actually help certain Decay Builds. On the other hand, if it floods the field early enough, it can be hard to clear the board before you get stomped.
Problems can come from Purification, but they only get three a deck...
Vs Growth
Is brutal if you survive any initial rush. All those potential death effects... Yummy. I advise using Searing Shackles as a unit remover/controller as structures aren't often enough played or are nullified by them. Even Quake is a boon to Decay if the right tokens are in play. Rally is the worst card to seen played, if you aren't defensive enough. Also, Godhand, natch, but hopefully you've been taking out his creatures.
vs Energy
This can be tricky, but Searing Shackle loves all those structures and Puppet Soldiers can be used tactically to prevent Incendiaries being used against other structures. Removal cards are also tricky, but again if you plan for it and have enough death effect units in play, it can actually be a boon. Energy is also slow to build up and Decay is very good against slow decks. Also, those lobbers are Decay's Fifth Column.
Amnivore
A great way to increase card draw. Admittedly injures your units, but there are plenty of counters to that (Scavenger Construct, ect) Also good on beefy creatures such as Iron Golem or even Mortars.
Arthritis
Ok, you need to be damaged to get the effect, but since Decay doesn't mind if it's creatures die, that's not as much as a problem as it would be in other resources. It will actually help get rid of your small creatures for the death effects.
Atrophy
Yeah..... No. The only reason to play this is to show your inexperience or that you are using a pre-con deck. Sure it can stop a big creature for one attack... but that's it. Sitting there like a turd in a picnic, taking up other card's room. Nope.
Bitter Root
I wouldn't rely on this to block much, its low health wouldn't stop an arthritic gravekin. On the other hand, as part of a poison focussed deck that has several miasma wells... It also has a nice synergy with Rigged in ensuring that even a big critter thinks twice about rushing at it. Still, remains weak against Energy.
Blightbearer
I like to position him between two puppet soldiers, giving my opponent the choice of instant or slightly delayed destruction. Also has a nice synergy with Poison and Suicide decks.
Brain Lice
One of my favourites. The fact you can use it on your own teenies means you get to control death effects and don't lose a card. Can be particularly nice when used on a creature next to unit with Aminovore. Also good on the enemy when used with other poison effects.
Cluster Hex
Never really used it. It would be a great addition to a poison deck, or maybe splashed in something with lobbers.
Cursemonger
Targetted double damage effects are always nice. Works nice with Witchdoctor as is a human and carries his own beefy attack.
Damning Curse
A cheap Violent Dispersal that also helps in Suicide decks. What's not to love?
Draining Mist
Never used it. Never felt the need. Perhaps this can be used in a new type of delayer deck with other delaying cards. Interesting. But it's nearly always better to destroy than delay and Decay really likes the destroy option.
Energy Syphon
Love this cards. Ramps up the energy, making the big Energy cards playable in a two tone deck. Also helps in suicide decks and making oppo counters less threatening. Super. Suicide fan's fun fact: Thundersurge and VD can affect your side too.
Grisly graft
I had some bad experiences early on when I sacrificed three good creatures for one good creature. Needs some care in it's use. Can't argue with its value in Witch Doctor and Suicide Decks as well as with Harvester.
Hex Marks
3 extra idol damage is nice, but not much in Decay goes for idols directly. One for the splash decks, I think. Could be put on Decay's big boys, but do you want to waste a card slot on situational icing?
Husk
Cheap chump blocker. Will come into its own when we get more undead creatures.
Ilmire Hunter
Insta-kill! Use with transpo and flip to get rid of large creature threats. Suffers from the fact that only inexperienced players put their dangerous critters out in the open, so you mostly end up taking out chump blockers. Still good, but not great.
Ilmire Rot Entire
Gets bigger when chumps around it die. Most players won't let it get so big, but it will have it's moment. Naturally, a must have in suicide builds.
Ilmire Witch Doctor
Decay's super man. Keeps board presence if surrounded by humans. A delayer that actually works and with his own powerful ranged attack. A must have in mono-decay.
Infectious Blight
Decay's slow board clearer (though can speed up very nicely if played multiple times and with miasma wells and curses).
Infected Gravelock
Asking for Dryadic Power being used on it. Small creatures will avoid it in case it gets hasted. Sure it can't move, unless you give it a Roasted bean potion or New orders or transpose it, etc...
Lifestealer
Haven't got three yet, so not used it. Seems to me would work best with other dangerous units around it, otherwise it will be blitzed by removal spells.
Languid
Nice card. Reduces damage to you and draws a card. Not a lot else to see.
Loyal Darkling
Suicide build's darling. Can't be stopped, except with Pushback.
Lumbering Muckhead (Harvester)
Fabulous card. Of course, it's weakened if your oppo is playing a low creature deck, so you can't risk playing it if you are also playing few creatures. Can be used with Grisly Graft to bring the countdown to zero and increase it's damage
Mangy Rat
Pretty weak, but packs a big punch. Use either in a rat deck or suicide deck. I can't recommend it for anything else.
Miasma Well
Essential to poison builds. Benefits from being ignored by inexperienced players. Suffers from not being ignored by good players. Three on the table is evil and can wreck your opponent's day.
Mire Curse
Good for combinations that require bunched creatures, that don't get death effects, such as Hon Gen. Can be played around. May also be forgotten by your opponent if played early and he isn't concentrating.
Necrogeddon
Never used it, because I have been hunting other cards. Obviously useful if you have a lot of creatures on the board. Hard to play though. You've probably been planning sundry ways to suicide your chumps for death duties, so you may not actually have many creatures to use it on, so It makes it less good than God Hand. I've seen it wreck my day, but more often I've seen it fall flat. Think carefully about using it.
Edt: Works really well with totem of suffering and Loyal Darkling
Oblivion Seeker
Just got my three, so am going to be trying it out. Getting two cards for the loss of one is nice. Being ranged protects it from spiky. Can be targetted by some of your own spells too.
Pestis
Essentially a situational buff. Best in rat decks for obvous reasons, but not bad without them. Pity the increased attack requires weak creatures to stay alive, which goes against the spirit of most decay decks.
Pillar of Disease
Three in a row would be nice, taking care of most mid/low level threats. Would need a specialised deck to get the best out of it.
Pillar of Fatigue
Did try this in a 'denial of service' type deck. That was a failed experiment. I'd only use this in zero creature decks.
Puppet Soldier
Best card evah. Tricky lobber? Put it in its way: dead. Use it with nutrition, tick, any other non-choosy removal spell to clear a line. Or use it as the ultimate chump blocker, making your opponent sacrifice at least one creature if he doesn't have many removal spells (growth). Also can give
