Scrolls Discussion First Impression of the 39 New Scrolls - 13 Page Writeup
Disclaimer: Unless specified, I'm discussing these scrolls with 1800-1900+ competitive play in mind. Many of these scrolls that I say aren't worth running in a deck would be totally fine (and in fact may even be much better) in lower ranked and limited (Judgement/Draft) play. I'm trying to be honest, not critical! I also have no test server access so I'm evaluating scrolls completely by intuition. I've been working on this since the new scrolls were announced a couple days ago, so instances of today, etc. mean the day the scrolls were added to test.

Order - 8 New Scrolls

Refined Strategy

Image

Apparently Mojang is embracing Mangonel dominance. Now that this scroll exists, you can never let a Mangonel exist on the board for even 1 turn. I don't think this scroll is going to become super common in Order decks just for Mangonel play, but the sheer fact that it exists should terrify you. Okay, maybe not. Ultimately, Order decks already have better ways to manipulate Mangonels already. Things like Transposition are still just better.

Proposed Changes: I'm not sure if this scroll even needs to exist, since the only thing it affects are Mangonels or (less likely) Mystic Altars. It's a combined Transposition and Haste, but lacks the scroll draw so I see no reason that it shouldn't cost 1 Order. Also, (prepare for this to be repeated several times) why is it necessary for this scroll to be rare? Common feels appropriate since its use is so limited, but I guess uncommon could work as well.

Tempo Theft

Image

This costs the same as Speed and is strictly worse, however this could easily be used to trigger Generals while you keep Speeds for Mangonels. Adding additional instant CDR to Order seems potentially very strong. This scroll is versatile in the fact that it can be played on your opponent's units, but there's very few situations where an opponent's unit would be at 0 Countdown on your turn

Proposed Changes: None, but I'm slightly afraid of Order getting even more ways to trigger Generals and Mangonels.

Vigor Extraction

Image

Thought Trap with +1 Decay. Good ramp scroll. One of the best new Decay scrolls added today. ;)

Proposed Changes: None. It's balanced and fits Order well. The art is cool.

Aging Knight

Image

This thing is quite good for turn 1 board control, but has no staying power. I don't think it really fits with Order's late game playstyle. This is a scroll that strongly depends on mulligans, and we don't have those yet. I feel that this and Tempo Theft were made to combo with each other, but I don't think Aging Knight is going to live long enough to make that gimmick worth playing.

Proposed Changes: This is a very good creature the turn you play it on, average the turn after, and then becomes essentially useless after that. It has to make more of an impact to warrant the strong downside to playing it. It would be really interesting if it came out with Haste and then attacked again the following turn. It would make this a solid creature in the mid to late game, but most likely too powerful in the early game. The ability, although interesting, makes this near impossible to be balanced into something someone would want to play competitively.

Mystic Altar

Image

This is essentially a Knight Scholar, but cheaper at the cost of a bit of versatility. Decent scroll, I see a lot of Order decks trying to fit this one in. They may find that there are times where you don't have a good unit to stall to draw the scroll in the early game when it would be best to play this scroll. It also has to stay alive for awhile to gain value from it (4 turns is a bit much for a 3 Health structure). It also essentially requires a "useless" attacking unit like a Ducal Infantryman or Wings Shield to be on the field.

Proposed Changes: I'm not entirely sure. I was considering suggesting Countdown 1 to help guarantee value, but that could quickly spiral out of control if the opponent doesn't have an answer for it. 4 Health gets it out of a single Quake range so it becomes more playable mid to late game. Other than that it's probably fine, but I feel people are going to have mixed results with this.

Caller's Bane

Image

This is Faith Chains v2.0. It might be slightly better, but still quite lackluster.

Proposed Changes: Yikes, maybe deal equivalent damage to a random idol (or something like 3 damage if that's too strong). Playing a scroll to do 1 damage to all idols isn't exactly great value, and there's no guarantee that you'll even get idol damage from playing this.

Royal Banner

Image

We discussed this when it was shown a month or two ago, and it hasn't been changed at all since. It's not playable because it's only good against the factions that can counter it easily with CDR (Growth and Energy). These are also the same factions that can easily remove it with spells like Burn and Quake. Against Order it does nothing (all the creatures are Human), and against Decay it does little (most creatures are Human). That said, it's most viable vs. Decay because of Harvesters, Rot Eaters, and Husks. It's too bad this is so lackluster, because it looks quite cool in-game.

Proposed Changes: I'm really just not a fan of increasing Countdown and this is a bit limited. Getting rid of the non-human stipulation could actually make this thing a threat. If that makes it too powerful, make it only increase Countdown by 1. Shrug.

Wings Captain

Image

Completing the Wings trifecta, Wings Captain functions as a mini-General. Note that this does not reduce the cooldown of Knights (Royal Vanguard, Knight Scholar, Honorable General, Aging Knight), but it's still quite good anyways. No complaints, this will most likely replace Ducal Spearmen in many Order decks. Wings Captains can trigger other Wings Captains (she's a Soldier), which combined with Fleetness could create an incredibly strong midgame threat from Order.

Proposed Changes: None! She's very strong and gives Order a stronger early-to-mid game. This can be devastating considering Order becomes nearly unstoppable if they can keep board control up to the late game.

Order Summary & Predictions

Tempo Theft and Wings Captain are very strong and will enter competitive Order decks. Both of these are in one way or another CDR scrolls, so prepare yourself for even less predictable Order opponents. Mystic Altar I'm the least sure about, it feels really difficult to get sufficient value from it, even though the scroll drawing power is extremely tempting. Vigor Extraction is a decent Decay scroll, it's not the best ramp scroll but still totally fine. The rest you choose in Judgement because you have no better options. Just keep in mind that Order is getting two new scrolls that function similarly to another Speed and another General.

Energy 8 New Scrolls

Supercharged

Image

This is an interesting scroll. Remember that enchantments have to be quite good to get value out of them, or else you're setting yourself up to give your opponent good value by killing the enchanted unit. This only does 1 damage per turn, but it is like an extra ranged attack so it can damage idols.

Proposed Changes: Change "at the beginning of each of your turns" to "at the beginning of each of your attack phases." Otherwise, it does nothing for a turn and your opponent can respond by moving away or destroying the enchanted unit. It's comparable to Faith Duty, and while it is considerably better, I don't feel it's good enough to run in an Energy deck.

Cannonetta

Image

So, Ranged Relentless is now a thing. Kinda. Piercing causes half of the damage to hit the unit behind what Cannonetta is attacking. In other words, if Cannonetta hits a Royal Spearman for 2, she'll hit the Ducal Skirmisher behind him for 1. Anyways, 2/2/3 Ranged Piercing for 3 isn't extremely impressive. It's worth noting that this is Energy's 5th 2/2/3 creature. Sure, it's better than a Tool Initiate, but it's still a pretty basic creature. Desperation on this thing is going to be hilarious though.

Proposed Changes: This is almost like a Royal Skirmisher with 1 less Attack (which is quite low to take advantage of the Piercing ability), so I have no idea why they felt the need to make this a rare. Uncommon feels appropriate; it's quite comparable to a Scattergunner. Just a different flavor.
