Scrolls Discussion Some thoughts from ESL 5
Copy of the post below:
---
In an attempt to keep an open dialogue about the current meta, I'd like to share my deck lists from this weekend's ESL 5 tournament and say a few words about the matches.
---
Bracket here: http://www.esl.eu/eu/scrolls/cup/autumn ... /rankings/
---
Pre-Tournament Thoughts:
I delete all my decks a few times each week and rebuild them from scratch. This tournament was no different. I put together an order deck for the first round feeling that it was a safe pick. I expected to play it throughout and did for the most part with a few variations below. I went in to this tournament thinking MO is the best deck with MG a close second if not maybe first (I am bias because I don't play MG vs MO that well).
---
I ended up playing three decks during this tournament:
Order: http://www.scrollsguide.com/deckbuilder/#9988
Energy: http://www.scrollsguide.com/deckbuilder/#9989
Growth: http://www.scrollsguide.com/deckbuilder/#9986
---
Games and some assorted thoughts:
Round 1: vs PangolinRex OvO
Round 2: vs Tipiak EvD
I finished my game early enough to check in on the continuing match of my potential next round opponents. When I saw that Tipiak won with Decay, I knew that his poison-heavy list would have a lot of trouble with structures. So I built an Energy deck before our match. It worked perfectly as his deck had no answers.
Round 3: vs Celtia OvO
Round 4 (Semi-Finals): vs Artr0x
Game 1 (Win): OvO
Game 2 (Win): OvO
This game was insane. Artr0x got imperial resources off before me and really snowballed into some large creatures while I was sitting with a few small units and three less order and an empty hand. I kept trying to push down his last totem with 2 hp but couldn't get through as he kept filling up the board. I sac'd like a madman searching for a win condition which came at the last possible moment.
Round 5 (Finals): vs Dodder
Game 1 (Win): OvG
Dodder bullied me around from the beginning and took a huge lead. I barely survived the early game and protected my totems as best I could with a heavy resource and card advantage from imperial resources. Eventually, he just couldn't get through my units. And, unlike my round vs Artr0x, he couldn't find that last win condition.
Game 2 (Loss): OvD
Dodder pulled out his Watcher deck and I got to go up against it for the first time. I think I would've done fine this match by taking out his first two Watchers early but he got out three harvesters at once and they got off multiple attacks on my totems and creatures and I couldn't answer. Triple Harvester really annoys me so I was pretty bummed after that match as I felt like I played really well but didn't have enough to stop them.
Game 3 (Win): GvD
I decided that even though Order was decent against his Watcher deck, I didn't feel confident enough to match up again as I didn't see what I could have improved upon from the last game to make the result any different. I had a good draw and he did as well so hoping for a good draw and him to get a bad one just didn't feel like a chance I wanted to take. So, I spent a minute and put together a growth deck that I thought might have a better shot at racing down his totems than my order deck. At the start of the game, he said he expected energy, which I did think about but basically concluded that I would be playing too slow in the face of his direct damage from Watcher. He also said he thought the match up versus growth for that deck was very strong. I ended up taking the game by a hair just like my first game.
---
Post-Tournament Thoughts:
16 total decks made an appearance in my tournament path. 10 were order, 3 Decay, 2 Growth, and 1 Energy. I played 6 games of Order, 1 as Growth, and 1 as Energy.
The first thing that jumps out is that I only saw mono color decks. I think this is a symptom of the meta being very fast right now. It is very hard to come back from a setback so that makes the opening turns more important than ever as the game can be decided by turn 7 or 8 especially in OvO. Multi-color decks have a lot of advantages but I think it is hard for decks like that to survive long enough to reach their potential. It's like when people figured out how to beat Draw GO...just finish them off before the engine gets going.
The meta is wide open. I think Dodder impressed a lot of people with his watcher deck. What is great about a deck like that is it is very cheap to make for new players so for anyone getting in to the game you don't need too many money cards to be playing at the top level. The other thing about that deck is it managed to solve a lot of the late-game drop off that watcher decks seemed to be having trouble with. The amount of damage it can do in a short period of time is astounding. I never felt safe playing against it, even from the first turn.
Right now, I think every color is viable with maybe Energy having a bad spot since it basically insta-loses to anyone who plays Quake and knows how to properly time it. I think Energy is way better than it used to be but am confident that it will catch up either through innovation or with a few cards.
Every deck has really strong match ups. It's just a matter of finding a deck with the least bad match ups if that makes sense. I played Order as much as possible because I believe it has very few bad match ups and can be flexible to end games fast with tempo play or scale late with imperial resources.
The bottom line is, I actually believe after this tournament that the meta is healthier than ever! That is amazing to think about considering just a few weeks ago everybody and their cousin was playing Order. Dodder showed last weekend with Growth and this weekend with Decay that you can do some serious damage and that, while the game may not be perfectly balanced, there are a huge number of deck variants possible. I think tournaments like these really push the meta and why the ladder reset will be really good for the evolution of the game. One of the things holding back innovation is the inability for creative deck builders and good players to get matches in against each other so with some new competition for rating we are going to see some new decks, more efficient lists, and some good debate on the best scrolls and decks this game has to offer!
